This veteran New Orleans-based funk quintet (bassist Robert
Mercurio, guitarist Jeff Raines, keyboardist Richard Vogel,
drummer Stanton Moore and Saxophonist Ben Ellman) collaborated
with a handful of some of the most lyrically endowed rappers
for its latest charged release, From The Corner To The
Block. Galactic asked each artist they worked
with to think of a corner that was important to them, and
the results inform this collage with a variety of styles,
including Mr. Lif’s politically-minded “… And
I’m Out,” which thunders along thanks a ‘70s
styled funk procession. The Thick-voiced Chali 2na
revisits his former stomping grounds on “Think Back” and
Boots Riley flows over a thick funk beat on the rock-ish “Hustle
Up.” Big Chief Monk Boudreaux does a spoken work
style over the astounding percussion of “Second and
Dryades,” a cut whose music is catchy enough to break
through as a single even though it contains atypical song
structure.
